Will fresh fruit in vases filled with water as centerpieces for an outdoor wedding reception cause flies?
12 Aug 2008
I am having my wedding reception on July 12 @ 1:00. I am using fresh fruit in vases filled with water for my centerpieces. I am wanting to know if this will cause flies? I can put a floating candle on top of the water if that will help. I need some advice, please!!
Actually, the fruit isn't the real concern for attracting flies, but the standing water will attract mosquitoes tremendously. Flies will be attracted by the food anyway. I would invest in a few citronella(spelling?) candles to help fight off the bugs.

2008 Jun 09 3Only flies can cause flies. What happens is the male and female get together and do the nasty and the female lays eggs and the eggs hatch and turn into maggots which grow up to become flies. I don't think your ceremony is going to take long enough for that to happen.

2008 Jun 09 5I think people are right saying that the fruit wont attract flies but the water will attract mosquitoes, but surely the candle on the top will get rid of that? Sounds like a great idea, very original!!

2008 Jun 09 7No, as long as they're not cut, you should be ok. I would have the reception staff keep candles on hand, just in case, but i think you're good.
