Link to Part 2 – Finishing the Centers:

This is the first step 1 and part 1 of my tutorial on how to solve a 5×5 5x5x5 Rubik’s Cube Professor. The second part covers how to finish the remaining 4 centers. I have placed the link to the second part in the VIDEO RESPONSES section for THIS video.

This part introduces new component descriptions and concepts for solving the 5×5 Rubik’s Professor, since there are many more pieces than a regular cube and also more than a 4×4. However, solving the 5×5 is VERY similar to the 4×4, so you should not have that much difficulty getting adjusted to having more edges and center pieces.

Notation Review/Examples:

R = Outer Right face clockwise
u = inner Up face clockwise
(Ll)’ = Both Outer and Inner left faces
counter-clockwise
(Rr)2 = Both Outer and Inner Right
faces 180 degrees

The main pieces that make up the center 3×3 block are (what I call them):

-Middle Center Piece (the axis piece or middlemost part of each side). This color of this piece designates the color to the side it is on. There is only one per side.
- Side/Edge Center Pieces – These basically flank the middle center piece, forming what looks like a cross when they are aligned properly next to the middle center piece. There are four of these pieces per side.
- Corner Center Pieces – these pieces are on the ‘corners’ of the 3×3 center block. There are also four of these pieces as well.

What we will be doing this part of the centers (part 1) is positioning/placing the first two centers of the 5×5 cube. I use white for my bottom and yellow for my top, solving the white center first. To create the centers, we will be making 2×1 blocks (as we did in the 4×4) and joining three of them together to form a 2×3 block. We will then be joining a 3×1 block to that 2×3 block to form the 3×3 center.

To make the 2×1 blocks, we will first need to join an edge center piece with the middle center piece to form the first 2×1 block. The remaining two 2×1 blocks will then be formed by matching a corner center piece with an edge center piece

This tutorial will explain everything you need to know for reducing your 5x5x5 cube to a 3x3x3. I definitely recommend that you know the 4x4x4 cube before trying the professor, however, viewers have commented saying they were able to solve the 5×5 with my tutorial without ever having solved a 3×3 OR a 4×4. One viewer said he used this tutorial and then used my 3×3 tutorial to do the final solve on the 5×5. It’s up to you.

Watch my review of the V-Cube 5 and I explain why that is truly the best 5x5x5 cube out right now. The Eastsheen is definitely a good cube for the price though, I own both. I only speedsolve with the V-Cube 5 now since I get the best times and it is the smoothest.

    I would say no. …
I would say no. The way I teach it, you just need to memorize one more short algorithm and you can use that algorithm (along with some from the 4x4x4 which you know) to solve the cases in the 5x5x5. Other than that, there is no parity when you’re solving the cube as a 3×3. Watch the rest of the steps for detailed explanations, parity is covered in Part 4.

Quick question. Is the parity in a 5x5x5 a lot harder than the parity on the 4x4x4? Because the parity on the 4x4x4 is really hard

    if rob doesn’t …
if rob doesn’t speak clearly, a lot of people will mess it up. for example, pogobat’s solution for 3^3 and 4^3 isn’t very clear. he messed me up too! it took a while for me to figure his solutions out. rob’s description of top and bottom centers works so well.
