Bridesmaid Gifts at The Knot Wedding Shop

I was thinkin in using betta fishes for my wedding center pieces and I want to put a flower inside and a floating candle on top would that harm the fish?? anyway Im having trouble picking the bridesmaids color of dress and the color of flowers does everything have to match. Please help. Any ideas???

Bettas aren't too expensive (a few bucks each depending where you buy them). The floating candles won't harm them (it's not as if the fish can catch fire right?) . Bettas are hardy fish, but extremely sensitive to cold. We were given a betta fish in a vase with one of those water plants in it as a gift at a rehearsal dinner. I was so excited to have a new little pet. Anyway, we left the vase in the car overnight (the wedding was out of town so we were staying at a hotel) and apparently it got a little chilly that night. The poor little guy was floating the next day. :-( Anyway…it's a cute idea, just makes sure they have a home to go to after the wedding. Don't want to have the ASPCA after you! As to your second question. No, everything doesn't have to "match", but it should coordinate. For example…if your bridesmaids dressed are blue, I wouldn't pick all blue flowers, but maybe a centerpiece which has a touch of blue here and there. Good luck..hope this helps!

Edit: By the way…don't put more than one male in each display…they will kill each other. Little bits of dead fish aren't too romantic.

Fish are living animals, not decorations. What are you going to do with them after the wedding? Flush them? Where are you going to keep them before the wedding?

Bettas need at least a 1 gallon tank to survive. Do you really want a suffering/dieing animal to be a centerpiece?

It doesn't have to match but I think it should match. Maybe you can have a 2 or 3 toned colored wedding and go with several different colors for flowers. I have bought betta fish for 97 cents at wal-mart.

No they are around 5-10 dollars each including bowl.
What would you do with them after?

We are doing Betta's for centerpieces as well, and I found they average any where from $12.00 to $4.95. Wal-mart sells them for $3.95. Check your local pet stores, they will sometimes sell them in bulk for a good price. We found a store here in Tucson that will sell us the males for $2.95ea. because we are buying in bulk. The females are usually cheaper, but they are not as pretty unfortunately. We opted not to do the candles for fear they might hurt the fish. Make sure you keep the containers so your guests, or you can take them home.

Bettas are fairly cheap, depending on the store about 2-4 dollars. It won't hurt them to be in with flowers and candles, just make usre that the candles and the bowl you use are very clean-any chemicals on them could get into the water and make them sick or kill them. The only other thing to be careful about with bettas is to make sure that you don't have too many-you don't want to be stuck with 4 or 5 fish because no one wanted to take them!

The colors of the dresses, bouquets, and reception colors doesn't necessarily have to match. Just make sure it doesn't outright clash, like orange flowers with purple dresses (I actually knew a girl who had orange-y roses with dark purple dresses…it was awful!)

I think that is a very cute idea. Betta fish are around 4-5 dollars a piece, just make sure that you find people who want to keep them and put them in bigger tanks when you're done.

Bettas are not expensive, usually around $4.99 each.

    HOWEVER

they are LIVING things. What did you plan to do with them afterwards? Please rethink this option.

As for colors- no everything does not have to match. I know lots of people nowadays are going for unmatched dresses. Two of the most popular ideas are all one color but different styles (all pink but some are strapless, some halter, etc) or all one style in different colors (same dress in a rainbow of pastels).

As for flowers, if you go with a palette of colors (pastel, jewel tones, all white, etc) you can coordinate with most everything. I would suggest keeping the flowers simple if you were doing a range of colors for the maids (say pastel blue, pink, yellow and green dresses then keep the flowers all in shades of blue, or all in a light pink and white roses, or all white flowers).

If you were doing all matching dresses (or all matching colors) then you could be a bit more flamboyant with flower colors. A bouquet of magenta, red and violet flowers would look stunning against a black bridesmaid dress. A bouquet of orange roses and flame calla lilies would really pop against a silver or navy dress.

Mostly pick the colors you love. My two favorite colors are gunmetal grey and sky blue. And those were my colors (gunmetal grey BM dresses, white roses and blue hydrangeas for the bouquets).

not a good idea to put fish, candles and flowers all in one. it wouldn't be good for the fish!
as for colors, no everything doesn't have to match, for example if for your spring wedding you can't decide between yellow, green, pink and blue for your bridesmaids gowns then put each girl in a different coloured dress! have each one carry a pretty little nosegay of mixed spring flowers - that would be lovely! it would fill the church/venue with fresh spring colours and give everyone a lift of spirit just seeing the girls looking so full of life!
centerpieces? many places do not even allow candles now for fear of fire….so why not have a vase of spring flowers for your centerpiece and leave it at that. simplicity is often the prettiest way to do things you know. many people are getting crazy with huge intricate centerpieces and often they don't look as nice as something less ornate.
try to remember the wedding is a single day, and not worth getting all upset over. what matters is you are marrying the man of your dreams and your life together is what this is all about!
whatever you choose sweetie i wish you a fun filled day and a marriage filled with happiness!

As what everyone else said Betta fish are not that expensive. The only thing is from my past experience in owning betta's, you cant have more than 1 in a fish bowl. They tend beat each other up. I would just asked the pet department how well they get along if you plan on using more than one fish in a bowl. Cute idea!! Plus im sure you have a plan as what to do with the fish when the event is over. If children are invited, an idea would be to pass them out to the children to take home when the event is over. Congrats and Good Luck!

Hi. Sink a rose (other other flower) in a vase. Once it's sunk, it appears larger and is very beautiful! (I saw this on HGTV). Then put down some votives next to it!

OR….do the colored stones and a couple of floating candles.

DON'T use fish! If you insist, then just do the fish with colored stones on the bottom. Don't junk it up with the flower and the candle too! These are living creatures. They are sensitive to temperature. You will need to transport them carefully and make sure the water temperature is right.

What will you do with them after? Don't assume your guests want them.

I am an animal enthusiast. I love them (including fish) I am getting married and will be using beta fish in large vases, putting colored rocks on the bottom that match the wedding colors and then adding a ribbon around the neck of the vase. I skipped the idea of plants because I was afraid they may hurt the fish. For these people that say “they are not decoration” what do they think having a fish tank is… a natural setting, don’t be silly. Its a recreation for the fish not an actual life fullfilling setting. I have called the parents of 1 child at every table and let them know that the fish on that table will be looking for a new home and if they were interested, it would come with its habitat and a baggie of food. if the parents said no, I asked at the office where I work and happily found a home for each and every one (15 total). Not only are these fish beautiful but they will make a great wedding centerpiece if treated right. Obviously nothing wants to be in a tiny cup or bowl, so get a nice big vase and use rocks to decorate, add fake vegitation and you are all set to find them a willing home. Good luck with your wedding. P.S. Find them homes before the wedding, either by drawing names of children attending and asking there parents or by asking co-workers that will attend. Dont forget to print out care directions! It makes care easier for the new family if its a first pet.
