Here’s a cute idea that I found on this site:

http://kristenmclane.com/2007/12/12/wfmw-elegant-centerpeice-for-under-5/

I used a pretty crystal vase and filled it with artificial snow ($1 from the dollar store). I took a quick trip to my backyard and picked out a few interesting branches. After I let the brances dry out overnight (they were covered with snow) I used plain white school glue to decorate with blue and silver glitter (1 container each of glitter for $1/a piece from the dollar store). I stuck the dried and glittered branches into the vase with artificial snow and attached a pretty white dove ornament on a branch. As a final touch I hung miniature blue and silver ornaments from the branches. TaDa…out of pocket expenses totalled $3!

Otherwise, use stuff that you already have in your house. Grab a basket or a vase and fill it with fruit or flowers/branches/pinecones from your yard. Floating candles would be pretty with some rose petals floating in a bowl of colored water (just use food coloring.) I’m not sure what you might have in the way of crafting supplies, but use what you have and just be creative:-)

Do you have pine cones where you live? Gather a few, put on a plate or in a decorative bowl. No out of pocket expenses. If not, you can purchase a bag of them for under $5 and put them in a glass vase, on a sliver platter or in a decorative bowl. If on a plate, use two red pillar candles and arrange pine cones around the candles.

The pine cone idea was great. Just buy gold and silver spray paint and paint them. Then place in a bowl. I do this every year.

Thrift stores have cool stuff and all the others answers are great ideas too. I have older relatives and friends that let me borrow decorative things for the table.

Live centerpiece 1: pine boughs (free from pine tree stands) spread out on the table with ribbon; tuck in oranges & lemons partially peeled in decorative stripes or studded with cloves; glue sparkle onto cinammon sticks and tuck in. Nestle in one pillar candle in the center. (smells good, looks good, lasts forever).

Artificial centerpiece: 3 dollar-store pillar candles nestled into flat sided marbles on a rectangular plate. Add floral moss and fake pointsetta flowers for accents.

Food centerpiece: Sprinkle table center with artificial snow around cake plates of different heights. Pile cake plate with homemade, decorated cut out cookies or a gingerbread house, nuts, and dried fruit. Looks awesome and if you do all the baking yourself is very reasonable (maybe a bit over $5).

Be wary of bringing in natural materials from outside for centerpieces where folks will be eating - you need to BAKE them for a couple of hours at low heat to kill all eggs & small insects living in the branch. One year a friend brought in spanish moss and by the time dinner was served there were baby red spiders all around the table. UGH!

If you want a center piece go and pick some wild flowers growing. That would look great!!

poinsettias are very pretty and can be all by themselves as a centerpiece.
otherwise pine branches laid along the center of the tables with large pillar candles in the center and some glittered pine cones scattered around the candles would be lovely or even a few plain glass ornaments.
