Toast Master Duties
25 May 2009
Quite often centuries ago for social and banqueting functions there would have been a professional Toastmaster. Today there are many people who prefer to have a Toastmaster at their wedding function, this is because he will help the day to run smoothly by the way he overseas and manages the event. He will liaise with the personnel and catering staff and is someone who has great passion for his work and is an impressionable character to have on such an important day.
The Toastmaster meets with the bride and groom on multiple occasions before the actual wedding, and when the day arrives, the Toastmaster will remain in constant contact with the bride and groom to make sure that everything is handled with efficiency and that the day is relaxed and comfortable for everyone involved. The Toastmaster’s job is to be as supportive as possible for the bride and groom by holding a clear map of the day in mind in order to make things run without a hitch. While the Toastmaster works, the groom, bride, family and friends are able to relax and enjoy the day.
Because the Toastmaster meets with the groom and bride on multiple occasions before the wedding, all three are able to develop a wonderful rapport. While the first meeting may feel formal and maybe a little awkward, because the Toastmaster is as yet a stranger, as all three become more familiar with each other, the Toastmaster becomes a friend who is trusted by everybody involved.
Every wedding comes with its own special concerns. In the case of the marquee, it is necessary to have a rain plan, wet and dry arrangements, a first aid plan in case of slips, and more than one seating plan for the top table. The Toastmaster handles this and is also dispatched to handle any and all problems arise during the course of the wedding.
One of the key, memorable events of the wedding is the bride’s father (or other close family member) giving that special speech, followed by the speeches of the best man, groom and maid of honor. The Toastmaster is there to give advice on the speech’s length, content if necessary, arrangement, and delivery. On the special day, the Toastmaster will be a reassuring presence, never taking the spotlight but instead being quietly supportive of everyone, especially when things become emotional.
Many people may be under the illusion that having a Toastmaster is only for very formal weddings, in fact he is quite the opposite he will be as formal or informal as you wish. He will not upstage the bride and groom in any way, he will be there for one thing and that is to make sure that the day runs smoothly at all times for the couple to have a day to remember.
The Toastmaster will arrive early on the day, then tactfully he will check that everything is properly set out the way it should be. He will introduce himself to the banqueting manager and staff familiarising himself with the venue and surroundings. This is where teamwork is essential from the bride, groom and guests arriving, reception drinks, wedding photographs, receiving line, commencement of the meal, cutting the cake and speeches and the evenings entertainment. This is where the Toastmaster excels himself by watching and overseeing the continuity of the day.
If you are going to choose a Toastmaster this should not be dealt with lightly, remember he is going to look after your special day and you want everything to be perfect. There are different ways to find a Toastmaster these are from recommendation, on the web or there are approximately 400 registered Toastmasters in the UK. These belong to organisations like The National Association of Toastmasters to small guilds.
