Throughout history, pearl jewellery has always been a popular choice for brides. Traditionally a pearl necklace was presented to the bride on the day by her father and symbolises love and prosperity. This originated in India several thousand years ago when a father collected pearls from the sea as a gift to his daughter on her wedding day.

The way these pearls are grown gives them much more variety in shape, size and colour, and prices vary depending on these factors and how long the pearls were cultivated before harvesting.

The main difference to look out for is whether they are freshwater or saltwater pearls. Saltwater pearls are grown in oysters in the sea and are usually bigger, rounder and far more expensive. They are rarer than the freshwater variety and usually considered to be more pure. Freshwater pearls are grown in mussels and come in a much larger variety of colours and shapes, making freshwater pearl jewellery a far more versatile choice.

With this increased choice of colour and style, a classic pearl necklace or earrings really could add the perfect finishing touch to any wedding dress.
