Your actual responsibilities are to see that the wedding is a total reflection of what your daughter wants for her wedding day. Included is keeping in mind her tastes in the kind of wedding and reception she wants as well as her choices for dress, flowers, colors and everything else involved. While you may be full of wonderful wedding ideas, this wedding is not yours and your daughter’s wishes need to be the deciding factor.

To start with, there are 5 primary responsibilities for you to look after as the Mother of the Bride:

Assisting your daughter pick out her wedding gown is a major task that will, more than likely, require both of you. Whether or not you love the dress your daughter picks out, tell her you do, that is unless she truly has picked a dress that looks like she could wear it to marry Dracula. If so, you will have to go that one alone
Another important responsibility that needs to be exercised as early in the wedding plans as possible is helping the couple create their wedding budget. An exact budget will lesson problems down the road, even though discussions about money are always hard. The entire wedding is tradtionally paid for by the parents of the bride, so your available finances need to be considered.

Make contact with the Mother of the Groom, if she doesn’t do it first, and plan to meet and discuss the wedding between your children. Many times the mom of the groom can feel somewhat left out of the festivities because most ofl the parties and planning seem to revolve around th bride. Reaching out to her and becoming friends is the best way to prevent stress down the road as your lives become more connected when grandchildren enter the picture.

The guest list should be organized as early as possible so the invitations can be ordered. The groom’s mother may have additions, so be sure to check with her after getting the groom’s list.

It is also your responsibility to make reservations for out-of-town guests. Your duties to extend this courtesy is only to the guests you have personally invited. People added to the guest list by the groom should be similarly taken care of by his family. As soom as the guest list can be compiled, out of town guests should be sent save the date cards, so needed hotel rooms can be reserved. The hotel can sometimes give discounts for reservations that are made early. When doing checks of room prices, ask.

Completing these preliminary five tasks as early in the wedding preparations as possible will relieve you of a ton of stress at the last minute. Many unforseen complications will fall into you hands to straighten out as the wedding date gets closer. To stay more on track make a list of all the things you need to do and mark each off as you do them.
