The phrase destination wedding refers to a marriage which takes place away from either the bride or groom’s hometown, putting the ceremony and / or reception somewhere where everybody travels to get to the marriage.  Usually destination weddings are smaller and dearer than their local opposite numbers, though the extra cost can be offset if the bride and groom honeymoon close to the site of their marriage and ask for marriage guests to pay for their travel costs on their own. 

Destination weddings are most often held in quaint and infrequently exotic locations, from Bali to Hawaii.  Destination weddings don’t necessarily need to mean that everyone has to fly ; a few hours drive away from home brings some folk to gorgeous, exotic areas that might as well be on the other end of the country.  One advantage of comparatively close destination marriages over their global counterparts is that more local weddings don’t require guests to spend a great deal of cash on travel costs, nor do they need to make an application for passports or visas. 

If you are planning on having a destination marriage, understand that many guests who might otherwise like to attend your wedding simply will not be in a position to afford the additional cost of traveling to the wedding location.  Many couples who opt for destination marriages have a reception right after the celebration, but then also host an additional reception back home for friends and family who couldn’t attend the ceremony itself.  This strikes a nice balance between having your wedding where you need while still getting everybody involved.  Naturally, you could always fly everybody who wants to attend the marriage to the location, though this alternative is highly pricey and is out of the method of most couples. 

If you do have a destination wedding, be certain to not leave your visitors high-and-dry before and after the occassion.  Have other activities planned for the weekend and offer proposals for side activities for your visitors, as they are essentially planning an entire holiday around your marriage.
