Here’s a cute idea that I found on this site:
http://kristenmclane.com/2007/12/12/wfmw-elegant-centerpeice-for-under-5/
I used a pretty crystal vase and filled it with artificial snow ($1 from the dollar store). I took a quick trip to my backyard and picked out a few interesting branches. After I let the brances dry out overnight (they were covered with snow) I used plain white school glue to decorate with blue and silver glitter (1 container each of glitter for $1/a piece from the dollar store). I stuck the dried and glittered branches into the vase with artificial snow and attached a pretty white dove ornament on a branch. As a final touch I hung miniature blue and silver ornaments from the branches. TaDa…out of pocket expenses totalled $3!
Otherwise, use stuff that you already have in your house. Grab a basket or a vase and fill it with fruit or flowers/branches/pinecones from your yard. Floating candles would be pretty with some rose petals floating in a bowl of colored water (just use food coloring.) I’m not sure what you might have in the way of crafting supplies, but use what you have and just be creative:-)
I'm having a Native American themed Eagle Scout Ceremony and at the reception I want to have Native American type centerpieces on the tables, but so far I haven't been able to find any ideas on the web.
If you've ever made or seen any please describe them, a link would also be very helpful.
See if you can find some finely woven baskets at some local thrift stores. Do some online research to learn what some of the common patters used by different Native Amerian cultures.
Even if the ones you find aren't all authentic patters, if you find some that are "close enough," these would be a good start for your centerpieces. You can find some artificial fruits and veggies at a local craft store to fill them with.
You can also find images of blankets and other textiles in Native patters. Print these out, in color to make paper table runners.
Definetly stay away from Hollywood cliche's like teepees, feathered headdresses and such. Not that some of these can't be authentic, but to make these that don't look cheesy would be an awful lot of work.
We have a HUGE guest list and many tables, and am looking for a cheap way to make centerpieces for the wedding, I would like to include candles somehow, and our color is a light blue.
Hi, and Congratulations!; You can certainly make amazing centerpieces for under $5; First of all, if you're thinking of flowers, try searching through your local yellow pages for wholesale/warehouse florists, they sell rose bunches at about $6-$9 for 25 roses, and very great prices on all other types of flowers too! (flowers can get very pricey and this definitely helps!). If your wedding color is blue, how about getting some hurricane vases (I've seen them at Wal-Mart in the craft section for about $1.80 each!), then fill them with sand (available at craft stores, or if you live near a beach or a lake that has a beach, scoop some up for free!), and put a lovely white pillar candle in there (this adds glamour and charm to an otherwise blah table), You can get some lovely 2-3 inch blue ribbon (to match your blue color used in other things you already have) and tie a lovely bow around the hurricane vase (you might want to add a little drop of hot glue to keep the bow from sliding down, if you want to have it stay up in the center of it). If you are planning a beach-theme wedding, then add some tiny little seashells (they sell bags of these t your local craft stores for about $2) and maybe sprinkle some around the hurricane vase and the center of the tables. Maybe add some white rose petals instead of the seashells if you're not doing the beachy-theme. You could also get little tiny rhinestones and use those instead of the rose petals or the seashells, and make it a very GLAM look!.
The point is to let lose, and get creative, try going to your local craft store and take a friend and try things there, you'll certainly come up with something fabulous for under $5 each!.
Best of luck!!

I don't want it to look cheap but I'm on a tight budget trying to plan this event. There will be 150+ guests so I'll have quite a few tables to decorate. I'm going with the silver scheme. I want it to be creative but nice enough for guests to take home so I'm not stuck with the left overs… HELP ME PLEASE!?!
Well I will give you a tip…Go to the dollar store buy champagne glass (1 each), a packet of dollies (50 for 1 Dollar) Candles (2 for 1 dollar)and flowers like roses (fake of course) with hot glue put a flower at the center of the dollie and place the glass upside down on the top of the flower to make a nice glass bubble around the rose (or flower) sealed with hot glue..place the candle in top, and just add any other decorations as you wish… I hope it helps, and I hope that every thing goes well..
I'm having a simple wedding so here's what I was thinking about doing.. A large hurricane glass (or cylinder vase) with the Crystal Accent gems (the water gel things) with a little glitter mixed in for some shimmer, a couple of floating candles on top, and wrap the vase with beaded garland. How does that sound to you guys? Could you give some suggestions if you have any? My colors are probably going to be scarlett (dark red) black and silver. I was worried about matching the reds to everything so I might just end up doing silver and black….
Yeah I'd wrap the garland around the bottom, not the whole thing..
The glitter sinks in those gel crystal things? I figured it would stay wherever you put it..

Second one down, the silver one. Kindof like that but with the garland instead of the mirror. Mirrors get too expensive..
I think that sounds good. I just don't know about the glitter. I think they'll stay in there, but it might just look like specs of something. I don't know that they'd really sparkle in there. I am doing something similar with vases filled with crystal gels and flowers on top. I am also adding glow sticks to the gels to make them glow. It looks really cool. I think you could do glow sticks as well to make it stand out a little more than the glitter. You could get red or just white. Either would work, but I don't think you could get the red to be dark. If you have questions about it you can email me. Good luck!
this is for my husband's 50th so flowers are OUT! balloons? any good advise ? please help me be creative… thanks
PS still looking for my dj…… all 50's music
It might be fun to have matchbook cars from the 50's, with Burma-Shave road signs: http://www.fiftiesweb.com/burma1.htm
Or figures of girls wearing poodle skirts and saddle shoes, and boys with DA haircuts, jeans rolled up at the hems, and leather jackets.
Drive-in movies and eateries would also be cute, although I'm not sure how you could make those themes into centerpieces.
Maybe you could find 45 RPM's from the 50's and create something around them. Whoever got to take the centerpieces home would have something to listen to for years to come (I have a collection of 45's from the 50's and 60's — over 500 — and I love to listen to them).
Whatever you do, have tons of fun. It sounds like a great idea, and I'm sure your husband's going to love it!
The current winter issue of Instyle Weddings mentioned this as one wedding planner's favorite thing to do. Has anyone actually done this and how does it look?
yes we did it for our wedding but we incorporated the same flowers just in different colors some were pink some were white but it turned out really pretty
A CCA Chef instructs on the technique of pulled sugar. The theme is from the San Francisco water front. This is a demanding project that takes skill.

We have a couple of "coffee table" books from a trip we took to Maine,a gold bowl with etchings from Pier 1,a blue bud vase with wisteria stems and a couple of Food and Wine magazines. But I'll tell you the coolest thing i've seen lately and I'm getting it when I find it in a store: a large sea shell ,the one that is pearly white and coral inside.Man,it can stand on it's own!Add a beach book or two and you are good to go.
What options do I have… something simple but elegant..
